Khatu Shyam Ji — History, Significance & the Nishan Tradition

॥ Jai Shree Shyam ॥

Who is Khatu Shyam Ji?

Khatu Shyam Ji is worshipped as the Kaliyuga avatar of Barbarika, the grandson of Bhima from the Mahabharata. Blessed by Lord Krishna, Barbarika offered his head (sheesh-daan) before the great war so that the side of dharma would prevail — and Krishna granted that he would be worshipped in Kaliyuga by Krishna's own name, Shyam.

He is lovingly called Haare ka Sahara — the support of the defeated — and Teen Baan Dhari, the bearer of three arrows. Devotees believe he answers every sincere call.

The Khatu Dham temple

The temple stands in Khatu, near Reengus in Sikar district, Rajasthan — our home. The self-manifested head of Barbarika is enshrined here; the present temple has been cared for and rebuilt by devotees over centuries.

The Falgun Mela

The grandest gathering is the Falgun Mela, held over the bright fortnight of the month of Falgun (February–March). Lakhs of devotees walk to Khatu carrying the Nishan, singing bhajans. The exact dates follow the Hindu calendar each year.

The Nishan — the sacred flag

Carrying a Nishan (a triangular flag on a pole) to the temple is the most cherished offering of a Shyam devotee. It is a vow fulfilled, a prayer carried on the shoulder. Nishans come in many sizes — handheld for children, to towering poles for groups and shopfronts.
